There are many beautiful and historical temples in Andhra Pradesh, one in Vakula Matha Temple. The Sri Vakulamatha Temple is situated in Peruru village, Andhra Pradesh, 5 km from Tirupati and 10 km from the Tirumala Hills. This temple is a beautiful representation of love between a mother and her child. Continue reading to learn the fascinating tale of this mother’s love if you intend to visit this location.

A Brief History Of Vakula Matha Temple

At most, the Vakula Devi Temple dates back 300 years. This temple, which occupies 83.42 acres, is designed as a center for tourist pilgrimages. Twenty kg of gold has been used to plate the temple’s gopuram. The Agama Shashtra has been followed in the temple’s renovations.

At Tirumala, Vakula Devi is said to be Sri Venkateshwara’s mother. According to the Tirumala tale, it all started in the Dvapara Yuga when Lord Krishna’s foster mother, Yashoda, moaned to him that she could not attend any of his weddings. In response, Lord Krishna said he would ensure she had that chance during the Kali Yuga. In the Kali Yuga, Lord Vishnu takes on the form of Lord Venkateswara, and Yashoda takes on a new life as Vakula Devi, Lord Venkateswara’s mother, to set up his marriage to Padmavati, the daughter of King Akasa Raja. Consequently, Vakula Devi’s wish to see Lord Venkateswara get married was granted.

The Vakulamatha temple illustrates the bond between a mother and her son and maternal love. The temple is constructed so that Maata’s face faces the seven hills where Lord Venkateswara lives, per Maa Vakula Devi’s request. The temple suffered a portion of the spoils and lost its splendor when Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan attacked this area.

The affection of mother and son is visible as the Naivedhyam is first offered to the mother and then to Lord Venkateswara in Tirumala. At Vakula Matha temple, priests ring enormous bells to indicate that Naivedhyam is provided to the mother. Later, priests at Tirumala present offerings to Lord Venkateswara. Such was the tradition before the temple was razed and stripped of its beauty and glory.

Sanctuary Inscription

According to Archeological officials, Sathyam Senior Conservation Assistant, ASI, Chandragiri, sent the division a photo of the etching. “During his twentieth year of reign, Kolutunga Chola I, the Chola King, left an engraving on a stone in front of the sanctuary gopuram, written in Tamil and with a message within. (1101 AD)” The ASI authorities stated that it is damaged and seems to document the establishment of the deity “Anchadavinna (kara) perumal” and his partner, “Pirattiyar,” in the Anchadavinnakar sanctuary of Talaiyur-perur at Kudavur nadu of Tiruvengada Kottam, Jayangondacholamandalam, by a specific individual from Puliyur Kottam.
